BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — West Virginia State Troopers are on the lookout for stolen campers.

According to a release, four RV Campers were stolen from Roy’s RV’s in Randolph County.

The RV’s were pulled by four separate pickup trucks and went through North Beckley Toll Plaza around 4:30 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2020. At around 5 a.m., troopers stopped two of the four trucks in Mercer County. They believed the two drivers, described as Hispanic men, were on their way to West Palm Beach, Florida. The drivers were arrested and the trucks are secured. The release stated the total amount of stolen property was $220,863.

The incident is still under investigation, however. Troopers said this is connected to the National Theft Ring, involving stolen RV’s taken throughout the southeastern United States and shipped to foreign countries.

The other two trucks were a white Ford Dually with a sunroof and a black Ford Dually crew cab truck. Both were hauling a bumper pull camper. They were last seen on I-77 South at the Ghent toll plaza. Troopers believe the other two RV’s are out of the area and heading towards Florida, or the Carolina’s.

Camping during COVID-19 brings an increase in RV sales

BOISE, Idaho — Following the Governor’s stay-at-home order, people were thirsting for adventure and visiting the outdoors in Idaho.

That has lead to an increase in RV sales as these recreational vehicles provide a way for people to get outside while also having their own controlled environment.

“You don’t have to worry about someone else’s germs or somebody else sleeping in the bed, it is all your stuff,” said Pat Fitzgerald, the sales manager at Bretz RV & Marine. “It’s your family, so it is really safe, you don’t have to do some of the things that you have to when you stay in a hotel or fly on an airplane.”

Fitzgerald told us Bretz RV & Marine had a slow spring when the pandemic first hit, but the months following have more than made up for that.

“Idaho is traditionally a great market for RV’s, but we have seen a spike this year,” said Fitzgerald. “Business is booming, and we are seeing the same thing in July.”

We also checked in with Boise Family RV Rental, a small family business that’s experiencing the same thing.

We talked with the owner on the phone who was driving home from a camping trip, he told us the area around Warm Lake was packed with campers.

He also says his fleet of trailers and an RV has been booked all summer with reservations well into August.

Here is a link to the COVID-19 camping report from Kamground of America.

The KOA report highlighted that one-third of leisure travelers who weren’t interested in camping changed their minds.

The report cites affordability, getting outside after being cooped up in their houses and more comfortable social distance practicing as the reasons why.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on most businesses, especially small local enterprises that depend on tourism. But one upside for a few local business owners has been a recent surge in RV sales as vehicles for outdoor adventures, family road trips and affordable socially-distanced living are growing more popular.

For the past two weeks, Auston Bergeson said he’s noticed a “huge” uptick in RV sales at Bergeson RV in Kalispell. Normally, he said the dealership sells about one camper every day, but recently he said he’s been selling about 10 campers every few days.

“There’s a wave of people wanting to get outside,” Bergeson said.

Spring is normally the busy season for RV dealerships as families gear up for summer road trips, but Bergeson said business has significantly increased since Governor Steve Bullock announced Phase One of his plan to reopen the state.

RV dealerships are considered an essential service under Bullock’s directive, so Bergeson RV stayed open while most area businesses were temporarily closed. Bergeson said the dealership had a lot of interest in servicing vehicles during the shutdown, but sales have really taken off since the state started its reopening process.

There seems to be a renewed interest in outdoor family vacations as many other attractions have been closed. Bergeson said a lot of customers who have been stuck at home decided, “you might as well be stuck in a camper out at Tally Lake.”

It helps that RV prices and bank financing are especially low right now. “With everything going on, it’s probably the cheapest and most affordable it’s ever going to be,” Bergeson said. “You couldn’t beat the deals that are out there right now.”

The low prices and attractive financing aren’t just drawing in customers for family road trips, Bergeson said they’ve also recently made sales to customers looking for affordable housing options and people using the vehicles to self-quarantine. He said multiple doctors have recently purchased RVs as a way to separate themselves from their families when they come home from working at hospitals. Some locals have also made RV purchases to accommodate family members who have come to the valley temporarily to escape more crowded urban areas.

With so much sudden interest, Bergeson said it’s become hard to keep up with the demand. They’re having trouble keeping new campers on their lot, and most of the new additions only last two or three days there before being snatched up. He added people are already putting in security deposits for models that won’t arrive for another two or three weeks.

Bergeson is grateful for the interest because the pandemic cut into the dealer’s normal RV rentals and sales to farther-flung customers. He said the closure of Glacier National Park cost the dealership a considerable number of RV rentals and purchases for summer worker housing.

But he said, “the amount of sales that we picked up because people need to find things to do in our state as opposed to what I would’ve sold to those customers is ten-fold.”

He pointed out Bergeson RV is the last family-owned RV dealership in the valley, but it isn’t the only place experiencing the recent sales trend.

“We’ve definitely noticed it too,” reported Tony Baker at Gardner’s RV.

He said the Kalispell dealership has sold 150 campers this month, “a significant increase” from their normal business.

In fact, Baker is worried “availability is going to become an issue soon,” since RV production was shut down for six weeks at the Indiana facilities where most campers are made. “We’re worried supply won’t catch up to demand until mid-summer,” he said.

“Luckily, we were pretty well-stocked coming into the spring,” Baker said. The longtime RV seller also decided to discontinue RV rentals this year because so many of their out-of-state rental customers were unable to make the trip to Montana.

Overall, though, Baker said the recent renewed interest in RVs has been the closest thing to a “silver lining” that they could hope for in light of the virus outbreak.

San Diego campground struggles to book Memorial Day weekend guests

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — We are one week away from Memorial Day weekend, but with the Coronavirus Pandemic, travel is close to a stand-still. This year, a popular local campsite is struggling to book holiday guests.

Memorial Day weekend is supposed to be Campland on the Bay’s busiest time of the year. Last year, they were at 100% capacity, with about 3,500 people at the popular RV and campground.

This year, reservations are nowhere near that number.

“Everything has changed,” Campland general manager, Ahmed Ait-Lahcen, said.

For the first time in 20 years, AAA is not issuing a Memorial Day travel forecast. They say COVID-19 compromised the accuracy of their data. Last year, a near-record 43 million Americans traveled during the holiday weekend. This year, they are guessing that there will be fewer people traveling to comply with stay-at-home rules.

Campland is feeling this first hand.

“We’re continuing to see cancellations,” Ait-Lahcen said.

At less than 70% capacity, the popular bayside campground is looking meager. To comply with city, county, and state rules, their restaurants are open only for pick-up orders, and their market has a five-customer limit.

Nearly all of their amenities, including group activities, pool access, and basketball courts, are taped off.

“We’re not taking any chances there,” Ait-Lahcen said. “We closed it.”

There are not a lot of reservations for new Memorial Day weekend guests. Most of the people at the site now are out-of-state visitors who decided to extend their stay to protect themselves from worse COVID-19 situations at home.

“They can’t go back to New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania,” Ait-Lahcen said. “They’re still here. It’s safer for them to be here.”

Ait-Lahcen says even without the usual fun activities the campground offers, families still have the beautiful San Diego weather and each other to get through the unusually slow upcoming holiday weekend.

“You can still go pick up a meal and stay within your site, which provides you a respite or an opportunity to get out of the house,” Ait-Lahcen said. “You get that, but in a confined type of environment. “

About 25 homeless people who were relocated to North Beach Campground in Burlington at the start of the pandemic have to find shelter elsewhere.People were moved out in the beginning of the week and the RV’s were being cleaned out Tuesday. The campers have been parked at the campground since March 26, an effort by the state in conjunction with the city of Burlington and ANEW Place nonprofit who managed the site, working to prevent a potential outbreak within a vulnerable group.”This campground was a really great example of nonprofit agency and city and state working together on a project,” said Kevin Pounds, ANEW Place Executive Director. The Vermont Department for Children and Families says the states rental agreement with the RV company ended on May 10 and they have offered a motel room to every household at North Beach to meet their emergency housing needs.Pounds says some people who were staying in the campers were relocated to various motels, but a few were unable to because of certain requirements like ID. “We are currently working with the city to reopen a portion of North Beach Campground on June 1,” Pounds said. The sight will be an organized tenting area likely to provide showers, bathrooms and support for people without housing. Pounds says the although he knew the campers were temporary, he wasn’t aware the contract ended this week and still see’s the need to provide a low barrier support system year round.
