NASCAR has canceled the 2020 Champion’s Week and Cup Series Awards Banquet in Nashville due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Following a 10-year stint in Las Vegas and over 20 in New York before that, the banquet was moved to Music City USA to much fanfare last December.
The move was met with such enthusiasm and positivity that it ultimately led to the scheduling of a race at the Nashville Superspeedway in nearby Lebanon, Tennessee.
NASCAR intends to honor the Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Gander RV & Outdoor Truck Series champions in some capacity at the end of the season. The Xfinity Series and Truck Series banquets were held in Charlotte, North Carolina, last season.
The following statement was issued by NASCAR on Monday afternoon:
“With the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus and the impact on the industry, this year’s NASCAR Champion’s Week and NASCAR Cup Series Awards originally scheduled to take place in Nashville will not occur. The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series champions will be celebrated at the end of the season with more details to come. We look forward to returning to Nashville in 2021.”
